The Realities of Owning a Giant Breed
Before adding a “Gentle Giant” to your home, it is vital to understand their unique needs:
The Size: Males routinely grow to 130–150 pounds, while females average 100–120 pounds. They require a home with adequate space to navigate safely.
The Drool: Newfoundlands will drool—especially after drinking, during exercise, or when dinner is being prepared. It is a natural trait of the breed’s lip structure.
The Coat & Grooming: Their dense, water-resistant double coat requires thorough brushing 3 to 4 times a week to prevent matting, alongside regular professional grooming to handle seasonal shedding.
Exercise Dynamics: While they are massive, they are relatively low-energy indoor companions. However, their joints develop rapidly; growing puppies need careful, low-impact exercise (avoiding strenuous jumping or long runs) until their growth plates fuse at around 18–24 months
